The eastern region is one of the largest regions of Uganda in terms of area. It stretches over 39,479 km or 11.6 percent of the country. It consists of districts that include Budaka, Bududa, Manafwa, Alpiti. The eastern region is one of the poorest and most water-scarce regions in the country. Agriculture is a mainstay of the local economy, and its potential for growth is high. Yet water scarcity presents a serious constraint to growth. According to a recent USAID report, “the Bududa district suffers from a chronic water shortage of 100 Mm3/year: total water resource utilization is 1,122 Mm3/year and demand is 1,222 Mm3/year, mainly from agriculture (95 percent) and domestic use, about 107,330 hectares, of which 65,400 hectares are on mountains.
The eastern region of Uganda is the most affected district with landslides, famine and drought for its having a very big number of mountains. It is water scarce and yet it has a very big number of vulnerable people that are affected for the landslides. They include the orphans, old people, lame people, deaf, poor people and disabled people. In most of the communities we there are no water sources to be used at the masjid for prayer.
Sameera Foundation constructed 13 deep water wells since March 2023 to provide clean drinking water to the needy communities. The photos of water well 13 are also shown below the table. The summary of all water wells is presented below:
